How To Get Your License
The Department of Real Estate requires that you take three (3) three-semester unit college-level courses. They are the Principles of Real Estate, Real Estate Practice and the third course is your choice from a list of required electives. Congratulations, you are in the right place! America West School of Real Estate offers these courses.
Step 1: Enroll into the Principles course
The online Principles course consists of 15 mini-quiz assignments and one open book final exam. You may finish the Principles Course on your own time schedule. Once you have covered the course material and completed the 15 mini-quiz assignments you will have access to four sample tests to help you study for the final Principles exam. Once your scoring is in the 70% range, you are ready to proceed to the open book final exam that consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. This is a timed exam. You must complete it in no more than 3 ˝ hours. You must score a 60% or better to pass. Upon passing this exam, you will be able to print your certificate of completion. It can be completed in as little as 18 days (minimum) or you may take up to ten weeks (online maximum). A live instruction Principles class is also offered. For more information on the live class, please contact us at (661) 334-4000 or tishana@americawestschool.com.
Step 2: Enroll in the two additional courses
Real Estate Practice is mandatory. The second course may be chosen from the following approved courses:
Real Estate Economics
Real Estate Finance
Real Estate Appraisal
**Real Estate Office Administration
Legal Aspects of Real Estate
Escrows
**Mortgage Loan Brokering & Lending
**Business Law
**General Accounting
Property Management
**Although these are approved DRE courses, we do not offer all of them here at the America West School of Real Estate.
You may sign up for any of these courses over the phone or in the office. These courses are done by correspondence or “home study” and can be completed in as little as 18 days (each), a total of 36 days if both courses are taken at the same time. Once the course material has been in your possession for 18 days, you may take the final open book exam. The exam may be taken online or in the office. You have 3 ˝ hours to complete the exam and must receive a 60% or a higher score to pass the exam. A certificate will be issued to you upon passing the final exam.
Step 3: Apply for the State Exam
You may apply for your state exam by mail, using the salesperson examination application (form RE 400a) online at www.dre.ca.gov . The fee for the State exam is $25. Once you have applied for your State exam date, you will have approximately 4 to 6 weeks before you take your exam. During this time you can take advantage of our online Cram Course. This study course consists of over 2400 sample questions that are similar to the ones you will see on the state exam. After you have gone through these exams, new exams will be compiled specifically for you, consisting of the questions you missed the first time around. This procedure insures that you will not be wasting time studying material you already know.
Step 4: Apply for your Real Estate License
After you have taken and passed the state exam, the Department of Real Estate will send you a license application packet. To get your license you must return this packet to the DRE, which includes the following items:
License application
State Public Benefits Statement (RE 205)
Proof of legal presence (i.e. birth certificate, copy of passport, resident alien card, etc.)
LiveScan Service Request/fingerprint form (RE 237)
Copies of all three course completion certificates
Fee of $120.00 payable to the Department of Real Estate (in check or credit card – form RE 909 – only)
It will take about four to six weeks to receive your license from the DRE once you have returned this license application.
Age:
You must be at least 18 years of age.
Experience:
No prior experience is required.
Proof of Legal Presence:
You must prove that you have legal presence in the United States. Submitting either a birth certificate, a copy of your passport, a resident alien card, etc, will satisfy this requirement.
Criminal Record:
You may be denied a Real Estate License if you have been convicted of a felony or of a crime that involves dishonesty. You may contact the Department of Real Estate and state your case to see if you are eligible for a license.
Spousal/Child Support:
You will be denied a Real Estate License if you are in a back spousal/child support situation. You will need to get this matter corrected before you can apply for a license.
*Remember anyone may obtain a salesperson’s license, but in order to conduct licensed real estate activity, you must place your license with a licensed real estate broker. For more information regarding job placement, contact Tishana Debenham at (661) 334-4000 or tishana@amerciawestschool.com.
